Tuesday 10th of March will see 5th place Hull City trek across the UK from East to West to the Low Dee Valley in North Wales the home of newly promoted, 6th placed Wrexham Town AFC for a 7:45 PM Kick Off. We have to journey back to 2001 where we had our last win at The Racecourse Ground when Brian Little just eked out a 3-2 victory courtesy of a Whitmore, Greaves (Mark) and Alexander treble, with the winner being scored on 79 minutes in front of a 1,700 fans.
Todays' Reds fans have since improved their fan base 5-fold from then, to an ever sold out 10,000 plus, packing the oldest international ground in the world and it was that same 10,000 that witnessed out last foray to the Y Cae Ras when we took on the Welsh outfit in the first round of the League Cup, drawing 3-3 at Full Time but ultimately losing out on Penalties 5-3.
City will arrive after a 3-1 wounding by Millwall on Saturday and marks the 3rd consecutive game against a top 6 side in 8 days but the result didn't match the performance as overall I was really pleased with how we played and thankfully we were back with an orthodox 4 across the defence as part of our normal 4-2-3-1 formation which has served us well for most of this season. We picked ourselves up from an Ipswich defeat and showed a far better front footed performance, more energy and some slick football on occasion with two stand out players in Slater and Drameh who had one of his best games yet. Covered both flanks, direct, good vision, good passing, he emptied his locker during the 90 minutes and gave us a great outing which shows promise for Tuesday night.
50 Grand (Slater) is putting in signature performances on a regular basis, full of bite and ball winning attitude which he put to good use against a tough Millwall midfield and came out on top of most 50/50 challenges or race to ball. Ajayi started his first game back after injury and looked a little rusty but hopefully the match run out blew the cobwebs off and would feature him in the starting line up next to Hughes, who needs to stop with his now regular habit of shirt pulling which was instrumental in Millwall's first goal at the weekend.
As it stands that's 6 games, 4 losses but If we go to Wrexham with the same game plan I think we'll come away with all three points because most of the last match we made a 3rd position Millwall look distinctively average and had two bullet headers not crash off the bar from Joseph and Hughes and our perfectly good goal had been allowed we would have seen a reverse score line. But not to be.
Tuesday's game is position crucial. We've had free hits in the last few games because earlier victories has put points in the bank and give us a cushion against losses. Well, now we are spent up so a win for Wrexham on Tuesday will see a swap for us from 5th to 6th on GD. A win for us will give us that 6 point gap again although they have a game in hand due to the FA Cup game against Chelsea who were pushed all the way to the wire by the Fighting Dragons but finally succumbed in extra time 2-4 to Ex City Manager Liam Rosenior, but certainly not disgraced. Scoring two against Chelsea is more than we managed to do in the same competition.
Talking of Ex City Managers, it will be Wrexham's Phill Parkinson with the reigns once again (who was with us for the first half of the 2006/2007 season before being replaced with Phil Brown) to face Jakirovic for the second and final time this season and City can be buoyed with the fact we already have a domestic Dragon scalp after dismissing them out of hand at the MKM 2-0, a goal in each half courtesy of Messrs Joseph & McBurnie who will be both available for selection.
So, from the 10th of December at our place to 10th March at theirs. A double is on the cards and the importance of it can't be overstated.
