Now firmly at the business end of the 25/26 Championship season, City are still hanging on with a firm grip and strong foothold on the promotion play off ladder having secured a very respectable point at home to the league leaders Coventry on Monday night.
After a less than energetic performance against relegation candidates Oxford Utd just 3 days earlier that got us over the line with a 1-1 draw and a point added to our tally the squad notched it up a few gears on Easter Bank Holiday and played like we know they can when everyone is on their "A" game and the outing has given the faithful an extra spring in our step as we march to Bramall Lane on Saturday.
Sheff Utd and Hull City have a large contingent of ex players going both ways over the years, not least, the very present when we will see, Oli McBurnie, Lunny and Egan from our existing squad return to their old stomping ground but sadly, due to injury our 50 Grand Engine Room, Reagan Slater won't be one of the ex Blunt players gong back to graze on his old pitch.
Sheffield Utd, currently sit in 17th spot on 51 points and a minus 1 GD without a win to their name in 6 games showcasing an unimpressive D3 L3 record with Chris Wilder in charge of his 3rd spell at the Helm of the red and white South Yorkshire outfit and reeling from a 1 - 0 defeat away at Bristol City despite leathering the Robins goal with 20 shots at goal.
City on the other hand are perched in 5th with a plus 5 GD and are putting one foot after the other on a cool and calm business like fashion with Boss Sergej Jakirovic making full use of rotating the embargo enforced cobbled together squad and making good use of the "Make do and Mend" ethos with the latest shining light putting out a great start against Coventry in the shirt labelled "Collyer" and made the difference from the bland Oxford outing, adding a good deal of forward thinking decisiveness and grit in the tackle.
Of course at this stage, no game is a certainty and one of Hull City's greatest gift to its fans is inconsistency and wonder if a better mascot than Rory & Amber would be best suited by Forest Gump and a box of his chocolates given that we never know what we are going to get.
On the basis of the upbeat performance against the Sky Blues, I have every confidence we can take something from Bramall lane but would be making use of Kyle Joseph (if not starting) at the expense of an earlier sub for Crooks as he ran out of sap by half time and possibly start with Belloumi instead of Joe. Millar was excellent and showed some deft displays of trickery and tight turns but needs to give that final pass or cross instead of trying to beat that extra man or get a half hearted hopeful shot away.
A fine warm weather week of training will do us no harm, a nice rest from the tight fixtures over the Easter Weekend I think well bag a 0-2 win and add a bigger sulk to Wilder's face and a bigger smile to Sergej's.
My loadout would be...
Pandur
Coyle - Ajayi - Hughes - Egan
Hadziahmetovic - Collyer
Belloumi - Joseph - Millar
McBurnie.
First encounter this season was at home back in October when 21,000 fans witnessed David Akintola put the only goal of the game into the Red and White net on 30 minutes for 3 points and a 1-0 win for The Tigers.
For an extra bit of support and back to the Forest Gump link above...Maybe a banner is in order...
