Sunderland – Is…is that the finish line?

Here we are then. A game that represents not only a chance at sealing promotion, but to also kill off any hope have of the opposition going up automatically. In seasons gone by, City have been close to automatic promotions and titles, but have fallen away at some point.

You get the feeling that this, finally, might be our year. It’s not just the confidence the team are playing with, but it’s the coolness with which City have dispatched opponents. Teams like Plymouth and Oxford are always potential banana skins to promotion hopefuls because you never know what you’ll get from them (hence their mid table mediocrity), but The Tigers have brushed off any sense of “typical City” with aplomb and taken nearly every team in this division, regardless of stature or position, to task.

As I said in the last preview, you have to give props to Grant McCann and his staff for that; League One might look like it’s full of FA Cup underdogs, but it’s notoriously difficult to get out of, just ask Sheffield United, Leeds, Huddersfield, Ipswich and Peterborough. This league can suck you in, you lose your best players to higher division teams, your finances drop and you have to adjust accordingly. Many teams see huge turnovers of players as they scramble to assemble competitive squads, but we’ve not seen that at City.

McCann has assembled a team built around a solid spine; a reliable goalkeeper, two solid centre halves, a midfield engine room and a potent strike force with a mixture of youth and experience make City the envy of many teams, even those in the division above. Make no mistake, there’ll be bids for players come summertime, but for now, this group are rightly enjoying the fruits of a strange yet enticing season. They deserve every success and I couldn’t be prouder of them.

Do you have to feel a bit for Sunderland fans? Maybe a teensy bit. They’re easily the biggest club in the division and by all accounts a club like that should be higher than it is, but they’ve dragged their feet this season and are now paying the price. Those games in hand that they had over City are now pointless, even if they win the one they’ve got they can’t catch us and are barely clinging onto Peterborough’s coat tails. Of course, anything can happen in the playoffs, but you just get the feeling that the players are starting to flag and after automatic promotion looked so tantalisingly close, with the last few results their heads look like they’ve already boarded a plane to Malaga.

They still, however, pose a threat. Charlie Wyke is the main problem City will have to deal with and his 22 goals in League One make him the second top scorer. Coupled with Aiden McGeady’s 12 assists (sitting joint top with George Honeyman), they can cause serious problems if left unchecked. The experienced Grant Leadbitter and Josh Scowen present a decent obstacle for City’s midfield trio, especially given their distribution and ability to find McGeady out wide.

Come on City, do this for all of us. Wherever you are Tigers fans, savour games like this because these moments are exactly why we go through the torture of relegation and cup final defeats. Enjoy it, no matter what the result.

Player to watch: Charlie Wyke: He seems to score goals wherever he goes and he reminds me of Charlie Austin when he was at Swindon. Lethal on his day, City must not afford him a sight at goal.

Predicted Hull City XI: Ingram, Coyle, Greaves, A.Jones, Elder, Docherty, Honeyman, Slater, Wilks, Magennis, KLP.
