View from row Z - Norwich at home.
Started off a good day as I trained it into Paragon on this occasion so I could have a beer or two and made my way up Anlaby Road chatting to a Norwich Fan and his three lads, helping them with directions etc etc. and felt quite positive about today.
Had my early tea of a bucket of Chicken Gyros and chips, a pint of Madri and took my seat overlooking a very healthy 22.1K crowd helped by a very good Norwich following, given the "off the beaten track" journey from East Anglia down the A47, A17, A15 and all
that village weaving nonsense so fair play to them. I was pleased to see the line up had been revamped since Wednesday away at Burnley and especially the starting of Crooks and Pedro up front. I had suggested that I would have dropped Captain Coyle for this
game due to fractures in his up and down performances but thankfully, Ruben held fast and persevered with our only assist player of the afternoon.
One lesson learned from Wednesday was an immediate front foot start to the game and Crooks made his intention very clear from the off that he wasn't messing around today and clattered Sainz, the left sided Norwich forward with a crunching challenge in the first
minute. On Wednesday, against Burnley, we were dead and buried in the first 20 minutes before we had even wiped the sleep from our eyes but this afternoon we set about the match with vigor and effort from the first kick and a very good first half it was too.
Crooks really in his element today I thought although I think we all knew he couldn't last the full 90 minutes, the 80 minutes he did manage and possibly 20 minutes too long as I would have replaced him on 60 minutes for Matazo but did us and himself proud
with a quickfire snapshot from a well worked build up down the right between Coyle and Gerhardt which saw Lewie get past the back man and drilled a cut back ball towards the near post for Matt to pounce on giving Gun in goal no chance.
That little move highlighted again what a brilliant player Gerhardt is. Whatever we paid in fees is well worth the money. Graft, skill, pace, attitude, he's got the lot and If Millar was fit (Who was in the stands behind the dugout with his daughter) our flanks would be a menace to any team we play. Saying that, Barry who played on the left was very impressive IMO, again, a very tricky and clever player who would not be bullied off the ball without a fight and a promise that there's big hopes for him. All in all
I couldn't fault a single player in the first half and we took the game to Norwich who we had on the back foot and Pandur never looked in Danger. Not a lot to do but what he had to do, he did his job to the letter.
1-0 up at half time to a team chasing promotion was a very welcome feeling but Norwich were never going to roll over but City didn't look as they were going to back off neither.
Second half was a bit strange the way it started. Now, I'm not blaming the squirrel...But it was a bit of a diversion for at least the fans who were following it's runs and nifty footwork and wondered if the players was half heartedly wondering if the ref was going to stop play until the fleet footed rodent was removed from the Norwich right wing, which is where the goal came from with Kellen Fisher putting a ball perfectly on Sargent's noggin to put the ball past Pandur square on to the near post. 1 - 1 on 47 minutes and the goal we all feared would be scored.
The Squirrel at that point ran off down the tunnel.
From then on, much of the second half was about Norwich getting a foothold on the game which they did and notably on 75 minutes when City's goal was peppered with shots including 2 from Sainz, 1 from Sørensen and a third shot from Sainz that struck Pandur's
left post. The subs through the second half maybe just kept more fresh legs on the pitch rather to improve the quality and one such occasion was when Kamara came on for Crooks, Kamara replaced Gerhardt on the right and Gerhardt was moved into Crooks position
in the middle.
From there, the right flank lost the spark and energy that Lewie and Joe had built over 80 minutes and the service ceased to exist whilst Gerhardt and his new wing man, substituted Burstow (For Barry) didn't really have time to get anything going so the focus was more on holding a point than unnecessary risk?
To sum up. Not disappointing at all and very thank full for a well earned point against a promotion pushing side. I enjoyed our game today and saw huge improvement in our quicker style and application with all our new signings making a positive impact. We've
played most of the top teams and done pretty reasonable. The lower to mid table teams to go and I believe we've easily got enough to see most of them off, we are a better side than the results we've had.
And to further put it into perspective. Just 4 months ago Walter took us to Carrow Road and 26 thousand fans saw Norwich Destroy Hull City 4 - 0.
After that we went 13 games without a win. Today, they came to us and were chasing, first and equaliser and then a win right to the 95th minute and we still denied them.
Honors even. 1 point in the bag for The Tigers. 2 points dropped by the Canaries.
My man of the match? Joe Gerhardt.
