Hull City AFC vs Portsmouth Saturday 8th November Match Review by Mark Walmsley

Up the Football League we go..........

A season home attendance record game against a struggling Portsmouth marked our poppy remembrance day and have to say it was immaculately respected. Over 23,200 fans stood in absolute silence while the bugle player gave a haunting "last Post" call that hung
heavy in the air as the standard bearers hung their heads in respect and their service battle flags laid motionless on the ground in respect of the blood spilled therein, on the battlefields of history.

A deafening roar broke the minutes silence as the game got underway and my word what an explosive start. Both sides were at from the first whistle and wondered how, yet another formation change would fare against a struggling side and overjoyed to see Destan
starting as a striker pairing with Joseph.

In the first 3 minutes Joseph should probably have put us one up and on 8 minutes Gelhardt who bolted away from his marker will have been utterly disappointed by his standards when he drilled the ball past Bursik's left hand post.

Today had that feeling of victory. Just something about our attitude and application in the tackle and in the chase. I can't pick a man of the match because all were faultless.

Coyle was a front runner at one point and thought he had one of his best games yet. Absolutely fearless and made of armour plating putting his head where some players would pull a boot out of and he took a number of knocks but bounced straight back. The next
player was Reagan Slater. A warriors shift this afternoon and wouldn't stop battling who not only bust a gut but must have worn both lungs out.

All in all our Midfield dominance was the key to pulling the strings which we did. Quality performance by Crooks who has seemed tired the last few games looked more alert and delivered moments of deft skill not usually linked to a player that looks like and
moves like an Oak Tree but he was always in control along with Hadziahmetovic who's not been a big favorite of mine but I'm really starting to warm to him and like his Derby outing had a great game if not more improved. Some lovely touches and close control.

Frustrating to see us go 1-0 down but it was a deflected goal I think I saw it as, credited to Devlin and as mentioned, it didn't seem a devastating blow given we controlled the game and scoring was just a waiting game.

And boy did it arrive. Just 10 minutes later, the man who must be puzzled why he can't get a regular start made every bit of the opportunity when Enis The Menace tucked away the goal that City was always going to score to drag us back onto the level playing
field for 1-1 to rapturous applause and a feeling of joy for the Turkish striker.

By this time Marathon Man Joseph who had already covered about 37 miles got his just deserts, powering in a far post header courtesy of a Joe Gelhardt cross and the first time I can remember when two strikers on the field got two goals in the same game. 2-1
and back where we belonged. In front

Devlin was their most active player and bagged a 2nd on 45+2 thanks the the ref allowing two Pompey throws to steal 3 or 4 yards of touchline on both occasions but their equalizer was sweet and swift as we gave away our far post defence from a long searching
pin point accurate ball from Murphy. 2-2 and back level pegging.

The first half performance must have given Sergej a headache. There was nothing to change as it stood. No one having a bad game, no one with injury issues and no need to change formation. For now. So I guess it was a case of "If it ain't broke, there's nothing
to fix"?

Devlin I believe it was, took a Howitzer to the face from a Giles fizzer that literally poleaxed him. He hit the deck like a rod of steel and the smack was palpable so I imagine that was the reason he was taken off 62 minutes in and reduced their quality and
energy which our defence took advantage of.

Step up Mr. Gelhardt. Joe was unplayable today and rewarded with a sublime ball from Hughes across the park that went hunting for the man in goal scoring form who took down the delivery on the run and dispatched with a precision dink past an onrushing Bursik
to put Pompey fans back in their box.

As expected the goal put a dent in Pompey's hopes and triggered a mass substitution flurry from Portsmouth's Mousinho to chase the equalizer again before the final whistle just 11 minutes away.

This is where Jakipovic played his counter move as we know he can and brought on a safe bet in Ajayi to prop the back up, fresh legs in midfield with a straight swap of Hadžiahmetović for Gyabi and Ndala out wide for a hard working Destan.

I don't know where 8 minutes of added time came from let alone a further added minute and a half but the master tactician had once again outsmarted his counterpart and we now boast 6 home games without a loss.

Acun promised us entertaining football when he first came. Something to get excited about. Well if this game had been played when he said that, it would have been the video advert to back up his words. I think he can safely say. We've arrived. At last.

Today was everything you could ask from football. Entertainment, excitement, thrill of the chase, anticipation, energy and best of all walking away with 3 points.

I Couldn't agree more Enis. UTT.
