After a very bright display from City during the midweek, seeing us climb a further 3 points away from our opponents Plymouth and 5 points clear of the drop zone, it's our turn to travel South on Saturday for a more civilised kick off time of 3pm at Bristol City's Ashton Gate ground.
The Robins also played on Tuesday and achieved the same score line of a 2-0 win against their opponents Millwall at The Den. Both games had the same tensions but at both ends of the table with The Tigers trying to claw our way from a relegation dog fight, Bristol were pushing to increase their chances of promotion which they grasped with both hands projecting themselves 3 points and 2 places up the table and are now on the same points as 6th placed West Brom and in 7th place on goal difference.
Bristol, despite having been lesser dominant than Ex Tiger, Honeyman's Millwall they managed to keep the Lions at bay and still strike twice in the second half with a goal from defender Zak Vyner on 56 minutes and Cornick nailing Millwall's coffin lid down on 83 to secure the game and his 3rd goal this season in front of just over 13K fans making it 2 wins in two games.
The City player link continues when we face Bristol in the shape of Scott Twine who's been playing number 10 on the left of a front three which is how they lined up against Millwall so their emphasis is very much on the attack. Scott has played 26 times in the league for Bristol and has netted 5 so a 1 in 5 player who needs to be kept an eye on and presume that eye will be Coyle's as it's his part of the turf. Twines last goal was 7 games away so the stats say he's due another.
As for how City approach this game it's pretty simple. The same as we did Plymouth. The shape and understanding between the players was faultless and I wouldn't even mess about with the starting 11.
Of course and with respect it was only Plymouth. They are in the bottom 3 for a reason and our win could easily look out of proportion if we don't keep our feet on the ground. We played a poor side without a plan and we dealt with it accordingly. We beat them comfortably but they are no yardstick for what we'll face against Bristol on Saturday. A team who is pushing for promotion, play on the front foot and will throw everything they have at us. I hope they think that because we are bottom end of the Champ we'll be easy pickings but as long as we apply ourselves in exactly the same manner as the Plymouth game it won't matter if it's Bristol or Barcelona we are playing because the effort, commitment, energy and application from what WE can control is the same. The difference and focus in this match will be between Ruben Selles and Liam Manning. A battle of tactics and how we set up.
We know we've got the attitude to take something from this game because we've seen what we can do when we are on song. The question is, will Ruben be playing the right tune?
Without getting carried away and keeping a sober view, I think a point will be a good haul at Ashton gate and nothing to be ashamed of. Of course a win would be through the roof of joy but as long as we don't get drubbed after such a fantastic pick me up we all had on Tuesday.
