Hull City earned themselves a respectable point away at Millwall today. A Jed Wallace penalty was cancelled out by a long range effort from Kamil Grosicki but The Tigers ended the game with just nine men after Jon Toral went off injured after all three subs had been made and Josh Magennis saw red for a second bookable offence late on.
Just 10 minutes in Millwall were given a penalty after Matt Smith seemed to be knocked to the ground by a Jordy de Wijs challenge. Jed Wallace stepped up and smashed his penalty straight down the middle of the goal to put the home side 1-0 up.
Five minutes after the penalty and the injury issues began for City. Matthew Pennington was substituted off with an injury, replaced by Leonardo da Silva Lopes.
A few minutes later and City had their equaliser. A freekick from out wide was looped in from 40 yards by Kamil Grosicki. The ball beat everyone and sailed in at the back post for the Polish winger’s first goal of the season.
Five minutes before the break and The Tigers should have been two up. Bowen made some space for himself in the area before getting a shot away. Bartosz Bialkowski could only parry the ball to Kevin Stewart a few yards out, but his effort somehow went agonisingly wide for a goalkick.
It took until the hour mark for City’s next enforced substitution. Reece Burke was forced off with a hamstring problem to be replaced by Ryan Tafazolli to add to an increasing list of injuries in City’s defence.
Ten minutes later and Jon Toral was also forced off with an injury just a few minutes after coming on and with all three substitutions already made, The Tigers had to end the game without 11 men on the field.
As the game went into injury time the afternoon got worse for City. Josh Magennis was booked for the second time in ten minutes and saw red for the first time in a City shirt. It was The Tigers’ third booking in just two minutes as the game came to a close.
Grant McCann will be in two minds after that performance against Millwall. A good point away from home but the injuries will be a huge concern. The international break has come at the right time for McCann and his men as he hopes to have at least some of the injured players back for Wigan Athletic on September 14th.
