The Electric Eels invited us to attend one of the Powerchair Football training sessions at the Allam Sports Centre on the Hull University campus.

On Saturday, 31st August 2019, Kathryn, Melvyn and myself arrived roughly around 11am to be met by Kai Gill (Academy Team Coach), for our introduction to the sport.

Initially my first thought on arrival was what an amazing set up they have at the sports centre, some of the equipment was top of the range technology and the togetherness and coaching drills they had on show emphasizes the experience they have in the squad.
During discussions with a members of the coaching staff, we were made aware of the costs of the wheelchairs been used by some of the players, I found it astonishing when I was told that some of the wheelchairs can costs upwards of over £5,000.

After the introductions, both Kathryn (Hull City OSC Chair) and myself were invited to try out the wheelchairs. I dived into one at the first time of asking, and after a shaky start attempting to dribble due to the sensitivity of the controls, I eventually managed to grasp the change of speed and direction more effectively. Kathryn was a little bit more apprehensive but likewise soon established the controls much smoother!
It was so pleasing to see how a sport can really change and have a positive impact on people lives. The smiles and looks of delight as the players completed their training schedules was a real joy to watch. One person who certainly caught the eye was up and coming ‘Ashley’ who looks like a real star for the future for them and he seemed to love every minute of the training.
They are currently being trained by National League Team Coach ‘Lee Brennan’ who really looks like he knows is stuff and his training drills looked second to none.
The next game is on Sunday 8th September at the Allam Sports Centre in the North East Regional League so if you have some spare time then I really recommend going over and supporting the Eels, although, we didn’t see an actual game being played, I’m certain entertainment is guaranteed!
