As their new charity of the year

We’re delighted to be able to let you know that The Daniel Wilkinson Foundation have been voted in as local charity of the year at the Sainsbury Hedon store.

You may remember a few weeks ago we invited you to vote in the store’s online poll , so we wanted to let you know the outcome.

We have supported this charity since October 2016, primarily due to its aims, but also because Dan was a Hedon lad, so local to us, and was formerly part of Hull City’s youth team.

Dan died on the 12th September 2016, aged 24, playing the game he loved, from an underlying heart condition called Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy (ARVC).

ARVC is an inherited condition that causes the replacement of cardiac muscle with fibrous, fatty tissue. This causes the walls in the heart chamber to become thin and stretched, impacting how the blood is pumped around the body and causing abnormal heart rhythms which can lead to Sudden Cardiac Death (SCD).

The Foundation aim to raise awareness of Sudden Cardiac Death in the young and to provide funding towards heart screening, defibrillators and CPR/defibrillator training, primarily for grass-roots sporting teams, and there have already been over 10 defibrillators donated by the charity to community sports groups, and there are heart screenings planned for 2019. Becoming local charity of the year at Sainsbury Hedon, will mean that more people of all ages will benefit from their work.

Thank you to those who took the time to go online & vote, and also to those who’ve supported our efforts to help them as to date, we have raised over £2,500 for this cause. Check out our calendar for details of our Quiz on Monday 13th August at which we #doitforDan.
